Blue Star Memorial at the Luray Caverns ~
The Blue Star Memorial Program originally began in 1944 in New Jersey with the planting of dogwood trees to honor World War II veterans. It was adopted by the National Council of State Garden Clubs in 1945 and expanded into a nationwide system of marked highways and memorial sites. The blue star itself stems from the service flags hung in windows and outside homes during WWII to represent a family member actively serving in the military.
The Luray Garden Club invited us to participate in the dedication and the construction of a Blue Star Marker at the Luray Caverns. The Dedication of the sign was in November of 2022. The recognition of the sign and flower garden was on June, 14th, Flag Day, of 2026. With the help of the Luray Caverns a RW&Blue flower garden and cemented bricks (in the shape of a star) were constructed.
Will Daniels, H&VGC President, and Ron Vickers, member, worked with the Luray Garden Club and Luray Caverns to construct the star and circle. Adelheid Osmers created the many delicious sweet and savory foods for refreshments.
Brenda Winter served as hostess. Sherry Rowe and Lesley Mack created floral arrangements for the podium and refreshment tables. Dave Naser sang in the choir. The ceremony was attended by friends, family, and sponsors of the event.
